Freie Schule für Gestaltung
Working for other designers can be difficult. But in this case, the collaboration was fantastic. Here’s what needed to be done: The website was getting a bit rusty and needed a refresh. We also took the opportunity to update the logo and harmonize it with the new look.
FSG is a private school for design with an especially friendly and personal approach. You can study everything from photography to illustration to communication design there, very hands-on with lots of contact to the industry. Besides, there are classes on the school’s own houseboat Julianne. What more to want?
“Bolder and more minimalistic” was our approach for the new FSG website. By reducing the homepage more or less to type, we were able to achieve both at the same time. The Mars font was a perfect fit for headlines and text, as it brings both a strong character and a slightly arty feel. Mars also has a historical component, as it is based on the Venus typeface (Bauersche Gießerei, 1907). This also allowed us to subtly hint at FSG’s historic building, the Honigfabrik (Honey Factory), which is only one year older than Venus.
Another important part of the new look is of course the logo. It appears on every subpage and therefore has to match, of course. Since FSG was still quite happy with the existing logo, we only made subtle changes here. If you want to learn more about this, continue reading in the blog ↗
It’s alive! From the beginning, we thought of the logo as a way to bring some movement to the site. So we built it as a 15-axis variable font. Each letter can be controlled independently of the others in terms of position, size, width, and weight.
Don’t you worry, you can still check out the page itself – as a reward after all the scrolling. And that would be right now.
